The goal for this degree project is to create a practical for the "Satelliteteknik 1"-course at
the Swedish Space Engineering Program at Umeå University. For the practical the existing
ground station at the campus will be used to take data from different satellites and presented
to the students via a computer. To be able to present data from different satellites on the same
system without to much work for the students, different script files are used to translate the
various telemetry formats.
Tasks for the practical:
Choose what satellite to examine.
Make a script file. The idea with this script file, is to translate the incoming telemetry packet
from any amateur satellite to a standardized graphic interface. This can be done by some easy
commands like plot, graph, pic, etc. One of the tasks for this degree project is to make this
interpretative program. In this way, the students will see how a telemetry packet can look like
and learn how to find important data.
Examine the output on the screen; e.g. platform data, pictures etc.
This interpretative program will take a lot of time to develop in a way, that it will be easy for the
students to use. Possibilities to plot graphs, display values (in a analogue or digital way), print
texts and perhaps a printer routine must be included.
A sub project, in co-operation with Stanford University, is to make it possible to take down signals
from satellites on the other side of the world. The project is called ASSET (Automated Space Systems
Experimental Testbed) and includes a huge network over the world for University students. The network
is connecting ground stations, sending satellite status and commands back and forth.
To make it possible to access the ground station over a long distance, Internet could be helpful. In this way,
practicals can be performed remotely.
Included in the project:
Evaluate what programming language to use. Interface with hardware, what is needed and how?
Software design/ Internet connection. Write the practical.

The practical is written together and will be the main presentation material at the end of the degree project.
A smaller report over how the work was done is written continuously during the project. Presentation of the
project is held on June 5, 1997.
